The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently sponsored a Regional Business “Pitch” Competition for students and aspiring entrepreneurs from Ohio University in Chillicothe and Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, with five finalist teams presenting their ideas to judges on April 24 at Shawnee State’s University Center.
The competition called for business plans to incorporate some of the available resources at the DOE’s former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site in Piketon, with each team presenting a 10-minute presentation before answering questions posed by a panel of judges from DOE, TechGROWTH Ohio, and university faculty.
The first-place winner was team Sky Energy, from Ohio University, which proposed a solar and wind farm that would re-purpose 120 acres of land at the Porstmouth site and provide employment opportunities during the construction and operation of the facility.
