How one VC firm uses the NFL’s Rooney Rule to widen its reach

NCT Ventures is pulling a page from the National Football League’s playbook for its approach to venture capital. Prior to the NFL’s 2003 rule that teams interview at least one minority candidate for coaching and general manager vacancies, there had been six minority coaches in 80 years. Since implementation of the so-called Rooney Rule, named for Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, 12 have been hired. In the historically white and male world of venture capital, Columbus-based NCT believes turning over more rocks will lead to a stronger investment portfolio.
