Nonprofit EWI, a Columbus research organization for welding and other means of joining materials, invented the training system that provides instant feedback on proper use of actual welding equipment rather than a computer simulation. It spun out the for-profit company two years ago, seeking to help manufacturers quickly amend a shortage of skilled welders.
