Silicon Valley giant Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers’ leading an investment round in Columbus insurance startup Beam Dental is the latest and loudest statement that Central Ohio’s technology startup scene is fly-to instead of flyover country.

The Menlo Park, California, firm has picked companies that became huge – Google, Amazon, Square, Nest and Twitter among them. Now it’s the lead and only new investor in the Columbus digital-first insurer that pairs its plans with a smart toothbrush and dental hygiene supply subscription to save employers money on claims.
