Opioid Tech Challenge recipients keep first responders safe

In response to the opioid epidemic, Dr. Abraham Joy and his team of researchers at the University of Akron developed a color-changing polymer that can be utilized by law enforcement to detect controlled substances. The strip, which Dr. Joy hopes will become embedded in gloves, can help first responders administer care while keeping themselves safe from harmful opiates. The team received a $200,000 prize from the Ohio Third Frontier’s Ohio Opioid Technology Challenge and will advance to the third and final round in the challenge, where they’ll have the chance to accelerate product development for market entry.
