University Hospitals Responds to Opioid Epidemic with Logistics Platform

University Hospitals in Cleveland is taking steps to help fight the opioid problem by developing UH Care Continues, a system that helps hospitals identify patients at risk of opioid addiction. The platform will alert caregivers when opioids are prescribed upon discharge. This will then allow the nurse and prescribing provider to have a consultation regarding the appropriateness of the prescription and make any changes or alternative care recommendations. As recent recipients of $200,000 from the Ohio Third Frontier’s Ohio Opioid Technology Challenge, the hospital’s technology aims to manage patient safety by including various health practitioners and community resources in the prescription process. University Hospitals will advance to the next stage of the Challenge, where they will continue developing UH Care Continues by creating an automated approach to integrating patient identification and follow up appointments.
