At AtriCure, the drive for diversity begins at the top.

In 2016, the senior leadership at the Mason-based medical device maker initiated a five-year program to improve and measure diversity, equity and inclusion among its workforce. The plan was initially focused on hiring and retaining women and people of color in a field largely dominated by white males.

Since 2017, five of the last seven board members elected to the publicly traded company have been women, as have three of the last four elected board members. Overall, half of the 10 directors are women, as is its board chair, B. Kristine Johnson, a venture capital executive.
